085 John Muthyala

John Muthyala was born into an academic family in Hyderabad, India. He was among the last of the students in the region to be educated by British and American missionaries.  John completed his PhD in Chicago and came to Maine in 2001.  Currently he is a professor of English at the University of Southern Maine. 
     
Professor​​ Muthyala leads the Digital Humanities Initiative at USM and is the Principal Investigator of Digital Maine, a digital humanities project that creatively integrates digital technologies to articulate social, cultural, and environmental themes related to Maine.  This non-traditional use of technology is a collaborative process applied across many disciplines and departments; it links humanities research and creativity with the work of technology companies, non-profit organizations, and small and big businesses to  order to generate new knowledge, methods, and ideas to revitalize the cultural and economic sectors of Maine.

Music: John Muthyala sings "Katrina" (electronic version), a song he wrote and produced in the wake of Hurricane Katrina to raise civic awareness and send volunteer groups from Maine to New Orleans and the Gulf Coast to help in the rebuilding effort.

078 Hannah Muthyala

Hannah was originally from Hyderabad, India.  She was born and raised Christian, a minority population within a predominantly Hindu and Muslim country. Hannah moved to this country in 1994 and spent 6 years in Chicago before making Maine her home in 2001.  She works as a Certified Nursing Assistant/Med. Tech and attends White Pine Community Church, Cumberland, ME

Hannah raises money by creating and selling jewelry to help support several children in her hometown who live with disabilities.  Through her own efforts, and with support from Partners for World Health, Hannah collects diapers and other medical supplies to take to India.  Friends of Disabled Children is an NGO (non-profit) Hannah started to help with this process.

034 Manasi Joshi - Diwali

Diwali is the Hindu celebration of the New Year.  It is a festival of lights held for five days during the darkest time of the new moon each autumn and celebrates the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, hope over despair. 
Manasi Joshi returns to New Mainers Speak to share her memories of Diwali in India and Singapore as a girl, and talks about how the holiday is celebrated all over the world.

022 Manasi Joshi

Manasi was raised in Mumbai, India (formerly Bombay) until the age of 6 when her father's job took the family to Singapore where the children would have better educational opportunities.  She left the small island for Purdue University in Indiana at the age of 18, wanting to study aerospace.  Manasi came to Maine to be near the coast.  She works as an electrical engineer and talks about women in engineering.

021 Abhay Singh

Abhay Singh was born and raised in a large extended family in central India.  He came to the US as an adult and completed his medical residency.  He is currently a practicing physician at St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, ME. 
Abhay has a passion for soccer and organized a co-ed soccer team called The Saints.  On that team there are people from a number of countries, speaking many different languages, but all playing soccer with a joyful love of the team and the game.
