031 Tarlan Ahmadov

Tarlan was raised in Baku, Azerbaijan in the former USSR.  More than a decade ago he came to Portland, ME with his wife and is now the Director of Refugee and Immigration Services at Catholic Charities of Maine and the father of two school-aged children, Rustam, 10 and Jamila, 8. 
In this interview he shares his memories and knowledge of Azerbaijan as well as describing two of the programs he oversees for RIS--"American Friends Program" and a "Mentoring Program."

The Music: Intro was Eldar and Nigar's song called "Running Scared" which won the 2011 Eurovision international music competition for Azerbaijan.  His closing song is a traditional piece from the Mugam genre performed by
Perviz Elikram ogly (posted by Seddam Novruzbeyov) called "Segah Mugam" on traditional Azerbaijani musical instrument Balaban (Duduk).

030 Clement Yombe

Clement Yombe is originally from Democratic Republic of Congo and moved to the Atlanta, GA in 2000 and Maine five years ago. 
He works for Community Financial Literacy teaching immigrants about finances and he and his wife Nancy own and operate a restaurant on Portland's East End called Chez Biso Na Biso featuring Central African cuisine. (NOTE: restaurant is moving to new location to open early in 2015).
He shares his reasons for starting his own business and what he hopes to accomplish by having a community hub where all people are welcome to exchange ideas, enjoy delicious food, and watch some African football (aka Soccer) together.

029 Aban Zirikly

Music: Intro Mozart's Symphony #25 in G minor by Sir Neville Marriner with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields.
Live violin interlude was by singer Oum Kulsoum, an Arabic song called "Houwa Sahih"
Final song was "L'hoperduta, me meschina" from Mozart's Opera The Marrage of Figaro.

Aban Zirikly is from Damascus, Syria.  He  arrived in Maine just over two years ago to be closer to his daughter and extended family. 
At the age of ten Aban began to study violin.  He continued his studies in Moscow and then eventually emerged as a world class musician (after a ten year interlude of being a practicing civil engineer).  Aban Zirikly has given solo, chamber and orchestra performances throughout Europe, the Middle East and the United States. 
Aban believes that music is the expression of the deepest source of life in us, even before language.

028 Toni Bazia

Bazia was born in 1971, the second son of the Lou tribal chief in Sudan (now considered South Sudan).  He arrived in the US in 1999 and in Maine two and a half years ago.  Since arriving he has co-authored three books with his friend Ann Smith, including Chocolate Boy.  He does many other things in the community including mentoring with Bright Future, running Project Bazia for the young people of the Sudanese diaspora, and more.  Bazia dreams big and encourages others to do the same.
