241 Amede and Adora Olise

11/8/2020

Picture
Picture
When they were nearly five the Olise sisters came to Maine from Lagos, Nigeria.  Now Adora (left) and Amede (right) are sophomores at Kennebunk High School. They are members of the debate team, civil rights team and mock trial.  They  love their extra curricular activities  and wonder what it might be like if the worldly kinds of lessons they learn in those settings might be taught in the classroom.  The twins share ideas they have for creating a less Euro-centric academic experience in their IB high school.  Click here to see the book project on anti-racism that their club has been promoting.

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to be part of a very small black minority in a predominantly white high school during the era of Black Lives Matter movement, Covid, and the 2020 election?  They will tell you!

215 Angela Okafor

9/16/2019

Picture
Angela has a life force that is as big as the sun.  She is a lawyer originally from Enugwu-Ukwu, Nigeria and moved to the Bangor with her husband in 2007, for his work.  She passed the bar in NY, as they had planned to move there after their time in Bangor.  But, they fell in love with the Maine and decided to stay and raise their three school-aged children.
Adaptability is the key to Angela's success.  She is bright and jumps right in to take action and make the world a better place however she can.  Beyond her federal law practice (Okafor Law), Angela operates Tropical Tastes (an international food market), Gela's Hair Braiding and Crafts and she served on the Maine Multi Cultural Center board until recently. She also heard the need and started an affinity group called Bangor Area White Parents of Black Kids.
Last year (2018) Angela was recognized as a "Trailblazer" by Empower the Immigrant Woman, a prestigious award. She is a confident and competent advocate.
Right now she is running for City Council in Bangor and who knows what is next!

Music: "Thankful" sung by Flavour

*This interview was conducted over the phone on Sept 23, 2019 after original interview was technically compromised.

102 Alban Maino

5/15/2016

Picture
Alban Maino was born in Bourges, France and spent 6 years of his childhood, in Lagos, Nigeria.  He believes that his exposure to world culture at an early age "opened his eyes and soul to different rhythms, to different gastronomies, to music and art from the world but more than anything else to realize that we are all the same no matter where we come from; kids from all over the world get along."
Alban attributes some of his success in film production to the global consciousness he acquired living abroad.  In this interview he discusses his current project called Memory Lane (http://memory-lane.tv/). It is a customized multi-sensory experience for people with dementia and Alzheimer's and their care partners.
Other films he has produced are available on his blog. (www.espritvoyageur.net).
Alban strives to bring a greater quality of life and health to the world and he believes integrative medical modalities are a key to our longevity and well-being.  During the interview he spoke of the Center for Wellness Leadership.

Music: Dillon Bustin's sings "My Lost Youth" (adapted from a H.W. Longfellow poem) from the album Willow of the Wilderness.
