071 Ephrem Bisimwa

8/30/2015

Picture
Ephrem Bisimwa is from Bukavu in the South Kivu Provence of Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.  He grew up there, one of nine children, the son of a teacher (and later an employee of the state) and a farmer.  He got his bachelor's degree in law and then worked as a journalist/radio broadcaster before working with victims of war at the Panzi Hospital.
During the winter of 2014 Ephrem and his family moved to Portland, ME after winning a Diversity Visa through the US government.  Since arriving he has worked as a laborer and speaks about the jobs he has had as he makes his way in this new culture, learning English and raising a family, as he goes.

Music: Madilu System sings "Si je savais ca."

070 Samira Albaldawi

8/23/2015

Picture
Samira was a bank manager for Rashid Bank in Baghdad, Iraq before coming to the United States in 2008.  She had learned some English in school but continued her education here while gardening and volunteering in the community.
Recently Samira suffered from a tumor in her neck.  Beyond being concerning, it also caused her face to droop, and she became depressed.  When she saw doctors in Boston they said surgery would be too risky and they should just watch and measure the growth of the tumor.  This did not seem right to her.  She found a doctor in Portland, Maine who is an ENT surgeon who thought her odds were better.  He completed the surgery successfully in April 2015, with excellent results and no negative outcomes.
Samira was so grateful to have been cured that she wrote a public thank you letter to Dr. Matthew Hearst, MD in the Portland Press Herald, had a portrait of him painted as a gift, and asked to come on the air to give thanks.
Music: "Taqsim Magam Ajam" from the album When the Soul is Settled: Music of Iraq by Rahim Alhaj.
